Fuentes signs with Northwestern College

      Last week, North Fayette Valley senior Andre Fuentes signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his education and athletic career at Northwestern College in Orange City. Andre, the son of Ignacio and Jennifer Fuentes of Elgin, is a three-year starter for the TigerHawks and has accumulated 143 career points, including 57 assists and 43 goals.

SW boys fall to Kee for second straight loss

     The Warrior boys became the latest victim of UIC-leading and undefeated (through Monday) Kee last week as the Hawks used a big second quarter to knock off South Winn, 65-49, in Calmar.

     Individual stats and comments from coach Derek Taylor were not available at press time on Tuesday morning; however, the tale of the tape shows that the two squads exchanged blows in the first quarter with Kee holding a 22-18 advantage for South Winn went cold in the second quarter, allowing the opposition to have a 16-5 scoring advantage.

The South Winn girls faced off against the No. 8-ranked East Buchanan Buccaneers on Thursday night, falling by a score of 74-26.

“They were a buzzsaw,” recapped coach Justin Izer after the tough loss. “They have a really good basketball team and could be dangerous come postseason.”

The South Winn boys’ basketball team was in action Thursday evening at East Buchanan as the Warriors picked up a big non-conference win over the Buccaneers, 70-66.

“This was a big win for our team,” said coach Derek Taylor. “Credit to East Buc, they shot the ball really well. It’s tough to beat a team that is shooting the deep ball better than 40 percent against you, but we were able to answer all their runs with a nice team effort.”

Luther College in Decorah was the place to be on Friday evening as the Warrior wrestling program hosted the South Winn Invitational featuring 15 boys’ teams from northeast Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. The Warrior boys scored 119 team points to take sixth and were led by No. 2-ranked 144-pounder Collin Holm who took first in the tourney.

The South Winn girls’ wrestling team was hard at it Friday night as the Warriors hosted the South Winn Invite at Luther College in Decorah. With 20 girls’ teams in action, the Warriors had a strong night, finishing eighth with 77.5 points and a pair of champions.

“Friday was quite a night! I was very proud of the way our girls competed,” said coach Ethan Adams. “We had four in the top four of their respective brackets! It was a chaotic night and our wrestlers did a nice job of competing and being prepared each time out.”

NFV boys bounce back with big win over Leroy-Ostrander

After a tough loss Friday night, the North Fayette Valley boys rebounded the following day with a big non-conference win over Leroy-Ostarnder (Minnesota) in the Border Battle at Luther College.

“We played less than 13 hours after the Kee game. Leroy Ostrander was 2-1 coming into the game and had two very good guards,” said coach Matt Krambeer after the TigerHawk victory. “We got off to a great start, going up 11-0, and never looked back. We had good defensive energy and shared the ball really well with a season high in assists (23) and points (77). Additionally, we got great play from our bench, which had 39 points.”

NFV girls record 6 pins in home debut against Cadets

The North Fayette Valley girls’ wrestling team got in its first dual action of the season on Tuesday night (Dec. 5) as the TigerHawks hosted Crestwood in West Union.

Despite winning six of the nine matches that were wrestled, NFV and Crestwood tied the dual, 36-36, with the win officially going to the Cadets based on criteria (number of matches forfeited).
