It’s been an interesting beginning to the start of the cross country season for South Winn, as several of their first meets have now been cancelled – including their originally scheduled meet at Charles City on Thursday. Anxious to get some competition in, the Warrior coaches were able to add a replacement meet last week as the team traveled to MFL/MarMac to compete against several other area teams in Luana.

“We were fortunate and thankful that MFL (Mar/Mac) allowed us to jump into their meet on late notice,” said coach Kevin Kearney. “It was good to get the season started and see where the kids are at.”

Sometimes in the game of football, the scoreboard doesn’t necessarily reflect the stats. That was just the case Friday night as South Winneshiek opened its season against Starmont.

“We came out and established a nice opening drive, but came up empty on the scoreboard,” said coach Jason Ohrt after the game. “Unfortunately, we had that issue multiple times throughout the game.”

Despite outgaining the Stars in total yardage by a 278-126 margin, the Warriors fell to 0-1 on the season as they came up on the short end of a 14-9 final score.
