The NFV girls’ golf team finished the regular season last week by winning a pair of UIC matches.

On Monday, April 29, senior golfer Mariah Wettleson had the thrill of her career in Calmar when her personal-best score handed the victory to the TigerHawk girls.

Everyone figured that it would be a close match, especially since the meet was on South Winn’s home course. And, it was just as even a match as possible because the two teams tied at 221.

“It was a really good showing by the girls,” commented NFV head coach Mark Nuss after his girls placed third in Thursday’s UIC Meet in Guttenberg.

“We scored in every event but the one that we did not have someone competing,” Nuss explained. “We were also able to double-up in several events.”

As expected, Kee won with 151 points. Central/Elkader and NFV formed a solid two-three with 138 and 116 points, respectively. South Winn was a distant fourth with 91 points.

The NFV senior boys won their fourth consecutive UIC track championship on Thursday, May 2, in Guttenberg. This time the guys won in dominate fashion, beating second place South Winn by 70 points, 204-134.

As one might expect with so many points, the medal count was very high; infact the TigerHawks earned 19 of them, including 11 gold medals. NFV was able to finish one-two in four different events.

This was especially true in the distance events where Chandler Douglas and Caleb O’Hare finished first and second, respectively, in the 800 and 1600. The duo ran side-by-side throughout the 3200 before putting on a strong burst down the backstretch with O’Hare taking the gold and Douglas claiming silver.

NFV boys' track only had one meet last week after the Warrior Invite hosted by Wapsie Valley on Monday, April 22, was cancelled due to the weather.

The TigerHawks did get Friday’s meet in Starmont in, finishing in a tie with Jesup for the top spot with 120 points apiece.

The weather wasn’t great with temps in the 50’s and a stiff wind; fortunately trees helped block the head wind, but did aid athletes running towards the finish line.

The big news for NFV was the fact Zach Masasman was held out of the last two races because of a slight groin sprain. The senior should be fine, but will be held out of the race Monday, April 29 as a precaution.

While Massman did not run the final two relays, he did earn a pair of gold medals in the 200 and 400 dashes.
