Friday’s game in Oelwein was everything people expected, a hard-fought game by two ground-and-pound teams coached by the master, Oelwein’s Bob Lape, and his student, NFV’s Justin Heins. In the end, it was the student with the better team as NFV rallied to win, 42-22.

The game was played in miserable weather with temperatures in the 30’s, wind chill in the 20’s and a 30 mph wind coming across the field into the faces of the TigerHawk bench and fans.

“We knew it’d be tough early because the Huskies were going to try and take something away from us,” Heins stated. “We knew they could only take so much away, so had to keep working until we found out what we could do.”

The TigerHawks found out, but it took awhile as they didn’t earn their initial first down for over seven minutes.

Meanwhile, Oelwein jumped to a 6-0 lead on its third possession as it drove the field using its hard-driving fullback behind a big line.

West Central had the new lighting system ready to go for Homecoming Friday night but couldn’t get its offense untracked as it fell to Midland, 48-6.

“Midland had some very quick linebackers and we had difficulty maintaining blocks,” explained head coach Steve Milder. “We struggled more on offense than we have all year.”

The Eagles came out hot, scoring two touchdowns in the opening quarter and three more in the second to take a commanding, 36-0 lead into the break.

The 2019 NFV Homecoming Game was anther case of “woulda, coulda, shoulda, didn’t” as the TigerHawks lost a thriller to Monticello, 30-14.

NFV had to try and come from behind all night, but four turnovers, three in the red zone, were just too much to overcome.

Early in the first quarter, a nicely placed punt by Tanner Johnson had Monti pinned on its own 14. It’s 6’5” QB hit a receiver on a short pass over the middle who then cut left, broke a tackle, and then went down the sideline for an 86-yard touchdown just 4:50 into the game. The PAT kick was no good, but the visitors had NFV in a 6-0 hole.

It got even worse for the TigerHawks when the Panthers went 60 yards in four plays to make it 12-0 with 4:13 left in the opening quarter.

NFV cross country competed at Waukon Tuesday, Sept. 24 with most of the runners posting their lowest times of the season.

“I was a good night to get a meet in,” stated head coach Neal Bentley. “A little warmer, windier, and more humid than we had hoped, but Waukon has a good, hilly course to race on. There were seven really long uphills that gave us a terrific workout.”

NFV runs over Anamosa

NFV finally got its running game fully untracked as the TigerHawks ran right over Anamosa, 26-8.

The game was moved to Thursday night due to the condition of the field in Anamosa and the possibility of heavy rain or strong storms in the area on Friday.

“We knew it would rain,” stated NFV offensive coordinator Travis Wymer at the Coach’s Roundtable Saturday morning. “The big question was when. A delay is hard on a team, but it really gets hard when you start, then have the delay, especially since Anamosa’s field is on the edge of town about two miles from the school.”

It did rain Friday, as the Waukon game at nearby Monticello had to start an hour late.

NFV went into the game with seven players not suiting up.

“We really had to make some adjustments during the week,” noted Wymer.

Thursday’s game was scoreless for over 12 minutes. Both teams managed first downs but neither could cross the goal line.

One NFV drive was stopped by an interception and Seth Meyer ended a Raider advance with a sack.

However, NFV would score three times in the second quarter to take a commanding 18-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
