UIU to honor Duffys Friday

      A farewell reception and dinner program will be held Friday to recognize the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact made by Upper Iowa University (UIU) President Emeritus Bill Duffy and his wife, Sharon, over the past 15 years.

      The retirement reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the UIU Student Center’s lower lobby. Cake and coffee will be served and no RSVP is required.

Earth Day at Gilbertson

Earth Day at Gilbertson 

      The public is invited to learn more about Earth Day and celebrate the planet at Gilbertson Nature Center in Elgin Saturday, April 20. Families will be able to participate in an Earth Day themed hike and scavenger hunt, followed by presentations about honeybees with Fassbinder Apiaries, and a maple tree-tapping demonstration.

      The free event, sponsored by Fayette County Conservation, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Those attending should wear sturdy shoes.

‘Friends’ book sale opens Thursday

‘Friends’ book sale opens Thursday

      The Friends of the Elgin Library will host its 27th annual book sale Thursday, April 11-Saturday, April 13. Reading buffs will have a wide selection of items to choose from 1-5:30 p.m. April 11, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. April 12, and 9 a.m.-noon April 13. With a purchase, individuals may enter once during the three-day sale for prizes and gift cards.

      The Elgin Historical Society will meet Thursday, April ll.  The speaker will be Jerry Trudo His topic: "He Hasn't Lost All his Marbles Yet!" features his hobby of collecting marbles. The presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m., with the meeting will follow. The public is welcome to attend

NFV Awards Night May 14

      North Fayette Valley graduating seniors who have applied for scholarships and meet the requirements will receive scholarship awards at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May14, at the annual NFV Awards Night at the high school. All parents, families, friends and donors are welcome to attend the program and reception following the event.

NFVCC meeting held

NFVCC Board Member

      The North Fayette Valley Community Coalition (NFVCC) met Tuesday, April 2, at the Elgin location. The meeting was also available via Zoom.

      Action plans were discussed as well as various grants such as the Drug Free Communities efforts. TIPS (Training Intervention Procedures), which are part of community action planning to assist merchants in the community was addressed. The NFVCC encourages multiple people and groups to be involved with such efforts, as well as partnerships with community organizations such as the Iowa State Patrol.

WU spring cleanup

WU spring cleanup

      The City of West Union will host its spring curbside cleanup Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23. For a fee, eligible items to be picked up include car tires, large truck tires, appliances, televisions, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, copiers, chairs, tables, dressers, couches, mattresses and box springs.  

      The stickers that are required to be placed on the items, can be purchased from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, at West Union City Hall.

Westgate Spring Breakfast Sunday

Westgate Spring Breakfast Sunday

      Westgate Fire and Rescue will host its Spring Breakfast Sunday. Serving will be from 7 a.m. – noon at the fire station. Cost is a free will donation.

      The dine in and carryout menu includes sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, eggs, biscuits and gravy, French toast, fruit, pudding, cinnamon rolls and assorted beverages. Handicapped parking is available in the front of the building.

Card shower for Bruce Amundson

Card shower for Bruce Amundson 

Bruce Amundson will turn 60 years old on Tuesday, May 5. The family would like to honor him with a card shower. The goal is for him to receive as least 60 cards for the special occasion. You may join in this celebration by mailing a card to: 219 E. Charles St., Oelwein, IA 50662. 

As a follow-up to his birthday, a come and go celebration will be held at Clermont City Park from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.
