Eugene Boie

 

Eugene F. Boie, 84, of West Union and formerly of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at Stoney Brook Village in West Union.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Inurnment will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery.

A visitation will precede the service at the church beginning at 9 a.m. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting Eugene’s family.

Ruth Elaine Zurbriggen Knight Kenney, 97, of West Union, Iowa formerly of Postville, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Elaine was born February 8, 1922, at Korn Hill Farm in rural Fayette, Iowa, to Mattias and Marguerite (Wirz) Zurbriggen. Elaine grew up in rural Fayette County and Elgin, Iowa. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1939. After graduation, Elaine worked in her father’s bakeries both in Elgin, Iowa, and Sumner, Iowa. After World War II started, she worked for the Gudeman Company in Chicago, Illinois, as a riveter. The Gudeman Co. made air and oil compressors for military airplanes.

Gerald David Gehring, 91, of Des Moines, IA, passed away July 15, 2019.

Memorial Services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 5, 2019, at the Hawkeye United Methodist Church in Hawkeye.

Gerald, Jerry, was born on a farm in Elgin, IA on July 11, 1928 to Lawrence and Edna Gehring. Jerry was the second oldest of seven children. He was an excellent athlete, including being an All-State Honorable Mention in basketball his senior year of high school (1946). He earned the nickname “The Swan” for his graceful hook shot. After High School, he enlisted in the Army, which included being on a military championship basket team. After the army, he attended Upper Iowa University where he played football. Jerry married Marilyn McIntyre of Hawkeye, IA, November 14, 1949. Most of Jerry’s professional life was in sales. He was a true people person enhanced by his sense of humor.

Pennebaker, Sr., (Penny to all his friends) 85, of Fayette, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.  Visitation will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019, from 11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree.  Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on September 27, 2019, at the Lone Tree Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457 in memory of Bob.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Danny “Dan” J. Davis, 63, of West Union passed away at home on Thursday, September 19, 2019.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with Pastor Adam Starrett officiating. 

A public visitation will be held from 3 PM until 6 PM on Tuesday, September 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in Fayette is in charge of the arrangements.

Dan was born on August 15, 1956 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids to Larry and Sally (Berg) Davis. He graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids in 1975. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College and Hawkeye Tech with AA degrees. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Upper Iowa University.

Donna Mae Larson,95, of Wadena, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born July 23, 1924, in Oelwein, Iowa to Joseph (J.E.) and Gladys (Gile) O’Brien. Donna was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Oelwein, with the Class of 1941.

 

On February 3, 1945, Donna was united in marriage to Herman Charles Larson, Jr. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. The couple farmed near Volga and Wadena, where she enjoyed being a farm wife and homemaker.  Two children were born to this union. They retired to Wadena in 1984. Throughout the years, Donna was very active in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Volga.

Kalen Layne Jacobsen, 45, passed away on September 3, 2019 at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, IA following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Michael Stanbrough

Michael Oliver Stanbrough, 64, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2019. He was born on January 4, 1955 in Hampton, IA to Donald and Gertrude (Stubbe) Stanbrough. 

Michael attended school in West Union, IA. He joined the army and served during the Vietnam War. During his time in the military, he met his future wife Lynn Aschnewitz. They later married in April 1979 in Santonio, TX. A short time later they held a wedding at Lynn’s parents farm near Dent, MN.

Michael and Lynn eventually made Dent, MN their home where they had four boys. He enjoyed hobbies such as spearing, fishing, hunting, working on cars, wood working and farming with family and friends.

His father Donald, mother-in-law Jane, and father-in-law Archie preceded Michael into death.
