Art Hemesath, 93, of Ossian, Iowa died Friday, May 26, 2017 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. 

Art was born Dec. 26, 1923 to Henry and Alvina (Scheidelmantel) Hemesath in Ossian, Iowa. 

He attended DeSales School. 

Art enlisted in the United States Navy in March 1945 and was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1946. 

Art was united in marriage with Janet Wallmark, daughter of Cliff and Callista Wallmark on May 21, 1953. Six children were born to this union.

Art was a man of enthusiasm and brought a lot of energy to any business or project he undertook. He owned and operated Art’s Roller Rink for 25 years. A place many lasting friendships and courtships occurred alongside a heck of a lot of fun. He had several smaller businesses, including Art’s Car Wash, Art’s Auction House and Art’s Bulls and Boars. He owned Hemesath Steel Construction Cuckler Building Systems for 19 years.

Art was of the Greatest Generation and served God, country and community his entire life. He was on community boards including the Ossian Senior Hospice Board of Directors for 24 years, the Winneshiek County Conservation Board for 8 years, the Winneshiek County Board of Review for 22 years, and the Finance Committee for St. Francis DeSales Parish for 19 years. 

He joined Knights of Columbus in 1942 and was Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was a member of American Legion Post 503 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1977. 

Art hung the Ossian Christmas decorations downtown for many decades and was involved in too many community projects to list.

Art grew up in a musical family. He picked up playing the tuba around age 55 and for the following 20 years could be found most weekends playing polkas. 

Art is survived by his former wife, Janet Hemesath of Ossian, Iowa; children, Cliff (Norine) Hemesath of Ossian, Iowa, Rick (Anita) Hemesath of Ossian, Iowa, Arlinda Michael (John Moskwa) of Madison, Wisconsin, Ron (Wanda) Hemesath of Decorah, Iowa, Lou Ann (Victor) Register of Morris, Illinois and Rod Hemesath of Ossian, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry (Marilyn) Hemesath of Monona, Iowa; and sisters-in-law, DeEtta (Alphonse) Hemesath of Decorah, Iowa and DeAnn (Elmer) Hemesath of Ossian, Iowa. 

Art was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alvina Hemesath; brothers, Joseph, Alphonse and Elmer Hemesath; and sister, Doris Huber.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Richard Kuhn and Rev. Robert Gross as the Concelebrants.

Interment followed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa with Military Rites.
