Alcorn services set for 11 a.m. today

Lavern Richard Alcorn passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society of West Union.
He was born on March 31, 1923 at home in West Union to George and Laura (Jacobsen) Alcorn.
He graduated from West Union High School and attend two years of college at Upper Iowa University.
Lavern proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged after his plane was shot down in France during his seventh mission. Lavern opted to re-enlist and he flew another seventy-two missions during the war.
He was united in marriage to Marcia Rose Willsey on December 30, 1955 in Topeka, Kansas. The couple, along with their two children, made their home in West Union.
Lavern worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. Lavern traveled over a million miles during his career.
He enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, reading, and coffee with friends.
Lavern was a member of the American Legion Post 15 of West Union, Masonic Lodge of West Union, Historical Society of Fayette County, and the Selective Service System.
He was an active lifelong member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.
Lavern is survived by his wife, Marcia “Marcy” of West Union; sons, Kim (Sandy) Colberg of Marion and Kent (Lynn) Colberg of East Moline, IL; three grandchildren, Nick (Meredith) Colberg, Ryan (Jackie) Colberg, and Krista (Alan) Vrombaut; four great-grandchildren, Hayden, Jackson, Allyson, and Adler; and many nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 am, on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union, Iowa with an hour visitation prior to service time.
Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery with Military Honors performed by American Legion Post 15 of West Union.
Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home of West Union is in charge of the arrangements.
