NFV girls 3rd in UIC by a point

Becca Miller (left) moves to the side of the track after finishing her leg of the 4x800. Meanwhile, Natalie Moyle has a determined look as she runs the anchor leg. On the backstretch during her final lap, a wall of water with hail hit the area, and the race was halted with the TigerHawks winning. Moyle didn’t hear the cancellation and ran through the gale-like winds, rain and hail to within 100 meters of the finish line before someone could tell her to stop running and seek cover. Just one point separated NFV and South for second place in the UIC Thursday in West Union.

Clayton Ridge, behind the incomparable Jasmine Staebler, won with 137 points.

Meanwhile the TigerHawks were in a close battle with the Warriors.

The meet was delayed twice because of a series of storms bringing high wind and heavy rain. The first delay came as rain and hail poured onto the track during the girls’ 4x800. The race was called with NFV ahead as blinding sheets of rain that completely obscured portions of the track.

NFV was declared the winner with SW second, but   no time could be recorded. TigerHawk anchor Natalie Moyle actually tried to finish the race in the rain and sleet that left one girl bleeding from the forehead from the hail; another person had bruises on the back of their legs. Meanwhile someone was able to stop Moyle about 100 meters from the finish line.

In other events, NFV went one-two in the discus with Emily Creery and Callie Mueller winning gold and silver, respectively. The 4x800 was the other gold-medal winner for the TigerHawks.

Kim Rounds was runner-up in the 100 hurdles and Natalie Fettkether was third in the 400 hurdles.

With a strong wind blowing into the faces of runners coming down the homestretch, not many record times were achieved. However, Allison Schori set a personal-best in the 200 and the 4x100 also set a season-best.

Head coach Mark Nuss called the meet, “A great team effort! Doubling up in events kept us in the running.

“This girls’ team has worked very hard this season, and the coaching staff is pleased with their effort and continued improvement. We just need a little more improvement next week in Osage at the State Qualifying Meet.”

The North Fayette Valley girls finished second to a talented St. Ansgar team by just 13 points at the Cowpath Relays Monday, May 4, in Nashua.

Head coach Mark Nuss commented, “It was a positive meet for us with quite a few season- and person-bests. We held some girls back to keep them fresh for the UIC Meet, yet still finished a strong second.”

The medal haul included nine gold and four bronze.

Creery (shot and discus) Moyle (800), Niewoehner, and Rounds (400 hurdles) won individual gold medals, while the 4x100, 4x200, 4x800, and the shuttle hurdle all came in first.

There were no silver medals, but Marin Ehler (shot) Mueller (discus), Miller (long jump), Feldman (400 dash), and the 4x100 each took home a bronze medal.

Once again, the TigerHawks were able to double up in points in multiple events.
