South Winneshiek hosted the South Winn Wrestling Invite in Calmar on Saturday, placing 10 wrestlers in the top six and earning a sixth-place team finish.
The Warriors crowned one champion as well as a runner-up and a pair of third-place finishers on the day.
Class 1A no. 2-ranked Ryan Hageman breezed his way through the 170 pound weight bracket, picking up his second tournament crown of the young season.
At 182 pounds, junior Landers Kuboushek (no. 4) found himself in the 170 pound championship match against Class 2A, number three-ranked Nick Baumler. Kuboushek fell to the fellow junior in a 9-2 decision, but earned 22 team points from a pair of pins earlier in the tournament.
Jordan Rommes earned 14 valuable team points on his way to a third-place finish at 195 lbs. He was able to stick Osage’s Joe Malecek only 0:21 into the match.
In the heavyweight bracket, Ethan Kipp earned a third-place finish in the tournament. The senior was able to pick up 18 team points, which included a 7-2 decision over Osage’s Orry Leggett in the third-place match.
The Warriors also received strong efforts from Andrew Wagner (fifth place, 112 lbs.), Paxten DeVilbiss (sixth place, 120 lbs.), Luke Massman (fourth place, 126 lbs.), Rodney Schwartzhoff (fourth place, 132 lbs.), Luis Uribe (fourth place, 145 lbs.), and Lane Schnuelle (fifth place, 152 lbs.).
In its first year of competing at the tournament, New Hampton took home the team title, scoring 212 team points. Class 2A no. 6-ranked Osage took home runner-up honors with a score of 198.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Dike-New Hartford for dual action with the Wolverines.
