North Fayette Valley will be sending five girls’ events to the State Track Meet Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

The events qualified at the State Qualifying Meet in Osage on Thursday.

In Class 2A, only the top two in each event automatically qualify; the rest of the field comes from the next-best times or distances from the other qualifying meets.

Since the meet in Dike had to be postponed until Friday, the final field at State was not determined until Saturday morning.

Individuals already in by Thursday night were Emily Creery and Regan Wolverton (second in shot and the 800, respectively). The 4x200 had won its meet and the 4x800 was second, so both were assured berths.

Saturday brought the usual surprises and heartbreaks.

Emily Creery was seventh in a strong field of shot-putters, but her personal best throw of 35’10” was actually enough to make the field in Des Moines.

However, the news was not as good for other athletes. Alexa Pleggenkuhle’s fourth place in the 400 was short of the cut. The sprint medley was third, and the 4x400, which had a season-best time,  and the distance medley were both fourth. However, neither was fast enough for the final field. Several other events were in the top six, but did not qualify.

No team scores were available from the State Qualifying Meet, but the TigerHawks tied for fourth with South Winn.

To score points at the State Meet, an athlete has to finish in the top eight. Going into Des Moines, Creery is seventh in the discus and 19th in the shot. Wolverton is 24th in the 800 and the 4x200 is 10th, while the 4x800 is 13th. However, at the State Meet, seedings can mean very little.
