Two-for-two for Warriors

 

 

In the regular season finales, the South Winn golf teams reigned supreme last week, defeating Turkey Valley and Starmont.

“We had great team scores,” praised SW coach Doug Schweinefus. “We are still working on getting consistency from some players. It’s getting to tournament time, so we need everyone at the top of their game.”

The Warriors finally had a nice weather day to compete as they traveled to Jackson Heights Golf and Country Club on Monday, May 5, defeating Turkey Valley 147-193.

Four individuals shot in the 30s, led by medalist Logan Schweinefus with 34 strokes. Trevor Schweinefus was close behind with 36 strokes to earn runner-up honors.

Other varsity shooters included Hunter Leibold (38) and Tanner Kuennen (39).

The JV boys also brought home a win, 183-206. Blake Kuennen led the charge with 43 strokes. Others on the JV card included Brendan Hageman (45), Anthony Emanuel (46), and Nathan Winter (49).

It was the final dual of the season at Backbone Golf Course on Tuesday, May 6, versus new conference rival Starmont.

The South Winn boys sneaked in another win, 162-181, led again by Logan Schweinefus (38). Runner-up honors went to Nathan Winter (40), who edged out teammates Tanner Kuennen (41) and Trevor Schweinefus (43).

It was a close matchup for the junior varsity squad, which lost, 199-196. Members of the JV squad included Jerod Heying (45), Emanuel (47), Hageman (54), and Adam Lensing (53).

Topping the Lady Trojans, 196-247, on Monday, May 5, the SW girls’ team was led by medalist Megan Elsbernd (45). Cruising over the course as runner-up with 48 strokes was Megan Bushman.

Megan Hageman shot a 49 with fellow senior Caitlin Holien carding a 54.

Other scorers at 57 apiece were Skyler Luzum and Jaimie Elsbernd.

On Tuesday, the Lady Warriors notched yet another win, 203-223, over Starmont.

Megan Elsbernd and Skyler Luzum shared co-runner-up medalist honors after each shot a 50 on the Backbone Golf Course.

Other varsity scorers included Megan Bushman (51) and Jaimie Elsbernd (52).

“It was very windy — again,” noted Schweinefus, “but I feel we finished the regular season strong.”
