SW golfers are hitting on target

 

 

Several weeks into the 2014 season and the Warrior boys’ golf team has just one loss.

Boys’ team

South Winn opened last week’s busy round of competition at the Tri-City Golf Course near Luana, teeing off against MFL/MarMac and Postville winning, 151-262-223, on Monday.

“It was a breezy day, but the boys are starting to show their power,” said SW coach Doug Schweinefus. “Our top four played very consistent today.”

It was a tight race for the medalist spot between sophomores Logan Schweinefus (36) and Nathan Winter (37). Close behind were Trevor Schweinefus and Blake Kuennen with 39 strokes apiece.

Other varsity players on the scorecard included Tanner Kuennen with 40 strokes and Anthony Emanuel with 52.

Junior varsity scores for the Warriors included Jerod Heying (44), Hunter Leibold (45), Darrik Poshusta (53), Brendan Hageman (54), Alex Kuennen (55), and Adam Lensing (59).

On Tuesday, April 22, the Warriors suffered their first loss by eight strokes to Decorah at Silvercrest Golf and Country Club in Decorah, 154-162. In the triangular that included Turkey Valley, South Winn came out on top, 162-196.

Tied with 39 strokes as South Winn’s top golfers were Trevor and Logan Schweinefus. Winter and Emanuel garnered just 42 strokes each. Rounding out the scorecard were T. Kuennen (44), B. Kuennen (44), Heying (47), and Leibold (49).

Nearly perfect conditions on Friday pushed South Winn to the forefront of Clayton Ridge at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club in Ossian, 153-182.

Medalist T. Schweinefus carded 36; L. Schweinefus was close behind with 37 strokes. Other varsity scorers were Winter (39), T. Kuennen (41), B. Kuennen (44), and Emanuel (47).

On Saturday, South Winn took part in a rare five-team, 18-hole tournament at New Hampton and won with 318. Second was Denver with 331, North Fayette Valley took third with 338, New Hampton was fourth with 343, and St. Ansgar rounded out the field with 379.

With 71 strokes, Logan Schweinefus was the tournament’s medalist; followed by brother Trevor with 77. Carding 83 strokes for the Warriors was junior Tanner Kuennen, followed by Jerod Heying with 87 strokes, Blake Kuennen with an 89, and Nathan Winter with a 93.

Girls’ team

Playing at one of its home courses in Ossian, the South Winn girls’ golf team topped MFL/MarMac and Postville on Monday, 198-235-242.

The team was led by seniors Megan Hageman and Caitlin Holien, who earned medalist and runner-up honors with 47 and 48 strokes, respectively. Megan Bushman, Megan Elsbernd and Bailey Timp carried on the senior trend, scoring the next-best scores with 51, 52, and 56 strokes. The team’s other varsity scorer was freshman Skyler Luzum with 59 strokes.

“It was nice to have two scores in the 40s today and a pair in the low 50s,” praised Schweinefus. “All the girls are showing improvements and will be a very competitive team.”

Just as the boys’ team had done on Tuesday, the girls’ finished second to Decorah, 216-205, but defeated Turkey Valley, 216-232.

Leaders for the Lady Warriors were Megan Hageman, Megan Bushman, and Megan Elsbernd with 53 strokes apiece. Caitlin Holien and Bailey Timp tied at 57 strokes, followed by Skyler Luzum with 58, Jaimie Elsbernd with 59, and Christina Wagner with 64.

On Friday, the girls returned home to Silver Springs to defeat Clayton Ridge, 208-260.

Topping the Lady Warrior standings were Megan Elsbernd with 50 on her card, followed by Megan Hageman with 51. Other varsity scorecard athletes included Megan Bushman (54), Skyler Luzum (54), and Bailey Timp (62).

South Winn wrapped up the week in the four-team, 18-hole tournament at New Hampton on Saturday, finishing second by two strokes behind host New Hampton (418).

Megan Hageman earned runner-up honors with a score of 102. Knotted at 103 strokes were Megan Elsbernd and Caitlin Holien. Skyler Luzum carded 113 strokes, followed by Jaimie Elsbernd (117) and Bailey Timp (128).

This week on course

This week the Warriors hosted Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday, April 29, but scores and results were unavailable at press time.

Thursday, the teams will travel to Big Rock Country Club in Fayette to pay a visit to West Central.

The week will conclude Friday at Ed-Co.
