Warriors ready for postseason

Mother Nature interfered again, but that’s something to which the South Winn boys’ basketball team has become accustomed during the 2013-14 season. Monday, the Warriors were set to square off in the District opener versus North Fayette Valley, but due to the snowstorm that blessed Iowa, the game was postponed until ________.

Last week the Warriors split two games to start the week, defeating Waukon on Monday and falling to Postville at the buzzer on Tuesday at home.

vs. Waukon

On Monday, South Winn traveled to Waukon and knocked off the Northeast Iowa Conference home team.

Both teams were on fire to start the first quarter, with SW edging out to a 20-18 lead. Still a fast-paced contest, the Indians poured in 19 second-quarter points to lead, 37-36, at the break.

South Winn returned to the hardwood with confidence for the second half and outscored the Indians, 32-26, in the second half to be victorious, 68-63.

Four Warriors notched double digits for the Warriors, led by Trevor Schweinefus’ 24. Adam Lensing hit a double-double with 16 points and 10 caroms. Andre Walz and Jordan Rommes added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

vs. Postville

It looked as though South Winn would control the tempo of Tuesday’s contest versus Postville as the Warriors sped out to an 8-2 lead, but a 14-0 run by the Pirates in the closing 2:23 put SW down, 23-15, after the first quarter.

At the break, the Warriors had worked hard to close the gap but never eased closer than seven points as Postville maintained a 41-30 advantage.

Clawing their way back into the game, the Warriors pulled to within eight, 47-39. Garrett Bohach found the basket on back-to-back treys, and then a Trevor Schweinefus steal and layup tied the score, 47-47, with 1:25 left in the third stanza. A late Pirate shot gave Postville a 49-47 advantage with eight minutes left to play.

South Winn took its first lead of the game since the first quarter on an Adam Lensing bunny shot with 5:45 left to play, 53-52. The lead continued to flip-flop between the two teams as Andre Walz sailed through a pair of free throws and Bohach drove the ball the length of the floor for a lay-up.

At the 2:14 mark, the Pirates hit a trey to lead, 59-57. However, 30 ticks later Jordan Rommes was fouled and connected on a pair in a one-and-one situation to tie the score back at 59. In control of the ball, South Winn was looking to drain the clock and have a chance at the last shot, but a Pirate steal with 40 seconds remaining gave Postville control. Not wanting to foul, South Winn played back on defense until a Pirate trey sailed in with six seconds remaining to shut down the Warriors, 62-59.
