Hageman, Brincks punch tickets to State

Freshman Luke Massman was hoping for a wrestleback for a chance to compete at the state meet after throwing Nashua-Plainfield’s Isaac Masters in 1:55. However, it wasn’t meant to be as the South Winn wrestler finished the Saturday in third place. (Becky Walz photo)

“Saturday was an exciting day for wrestling fans and South Winn wrestling,” noted SW coach Jacob Elsbernd. “We had an outstanding week of practice and had five very focused individuals wrestling.”

Earning District titles were Ryan Hageman (170) and Chris Brincks (195) to earn their tickets to the big stage Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 20-22, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The day started off at 106 lbs. with junior Cody Fisher facing Class 1A third-ranked Jordan Schmitz of Don Bosco. Fisher was thrown in 1:28, but rebounded to put up a tough fight for third versus Will Portis of Rockford.

“Cody has come a long way and has pushed through some tough times to get to this point,” praised Elsbernd. “It is nice to see the hard work paying off and see him having fun and winning matches.”

At 113 lbs. Luke Massman is an exciting wrestler to watch, and he didn’t disappoint on Saturday in the third-place match as he threw Isaac Masters of Nashua-Plainfield in 1:55. Unfortunately he didn’t get the wrestleback, but Elsbernd was proud of the great season the freshman had put together.

“Luke has gotten much better as the season progressed and has learned a lot about wrestling in his first high school season. He is competitive and not afraid of hard work,” complimented Elsbernd.

Facing the fifth- and eighth-ranked wrestlers at 132 lbs., Luis Uribe had his worked cut out for himself. The junior lost a couple of tough matches and was unable to reach his goals of being a state qualifier.

In his match for third versus Hudson’s Jeremy Smith, Uribe had an early 4-1 first-period lead with a couple of takedowns. Starting the second period in the defensive position, Uribe tried to fight off Smith to no avail as he was thrown in 2:52.

“We are fortunate that he will be back next season, and he is already looking forward to it,” stated Elsbernd. “He is one kid who knows that it takes hard work and dedication to be the best and will push his teammates to follow his lead.”

Entering Saturday’s meet ranked seventh, Ryan Hageman and his coaches felt he was the best wrestler at 170 lbs. That is something he was able to prove by pinning Dylan Ciavarelli of Clarksville in 1:17. In the finals, Hageman was able to control the match to win the 7-2 decision, earn the District title and advance to State.

“Ryan is a very coachable wrestler and is driven to be the best,” noted Elsbernd. “We feel very good about his placements in the state tournament bracket and are excited for the opportunity that lies ahead.”

As one of the most dominant high school wrestlers in northeast Iowa, senior Chris Brincks (195) continued his ways Saturday with a 0:38 throw of Dike-New Hartford’s Brice Beninga and a 15-5 major decision over Tyler Larson of Nashua-Plainfield.

“Chris has one goal, and that is to be at the top of the podium on Saturday night. He is fully capable of this, and as long as he continues to stay focused on one match at a time and wrestles to his ability, I feel that anything is possible with him,” said Elsbernd.
