Mother Nature intervened again. Instead of playing a trio of conference games last week, the South Winn boys’ basketball team was left to settle for one, but it was a big rival win over neighboring Turkey Valley, 79-51.

The Warriors put up a first quarter that tops all others this season with 28 points; Trevor Schweinefus scored 15 of those for South Winn.

South Winn continued to steamroll the Trojans in the second period despite TV narrowing the margin to 11 with 5:10 remaining. The second stanza belonged to Jordan Rommes, who sailed in eight points and Andre Walz, who connected for five SW points, as the Warriors led, 47-22, at halftime.

Continuing an up-tempo pace and man-to-man defense, South Winn pushed the lead to 64-34. It was near the end of the third period before SW coach Chris Streeter began retiring his starters and top players to the pine.

Stepping up to fill the shoes of the starters, sophomore Carson Lensing managed to find his way to the basket three times for a total of six points in the final quarter while Christian Kleve knocked down five.

The Warriors will face a test of endurance this week with four games in five days, due in part to Mother Nature’s onslaught of snow and wind the last few weeks. South Winn opened this week at Starmont on Monday and hosted West Central for Senior Night on Tuesday. Game results and statistics were unavailable at press time.

South Winn will cap off the week at North Fayette Valley on Thursday and return home on Friday to host Starmont.
