TigerHawk boys beat Warriors

As Austin Callahan seems to fly to the basket, all the MFL/MM players can do is gape in amazement. The sophomore canned two of his six points for NFV in Friday’s 49-44 loss to the seventh-ranked Bulldogs. (Jerry Wadian photo)

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team split a pair of UIC games last week, beating Central, 60-56, Monday, Jan. 13, in Elkader. Friday, the TigerHawks gave seventh-ranked MFL/MM all it could handle before the Bulldogs prevailed, 49-44.

Saturday’s makeup game against South Winn had to be postponed for a second time due to the weather; it will be made up on Sat., Jan. 25, in Calmar.

Monday was a makeup contest that the visiting TigerHawks controlled most of the way.

NFV held a 19-16 lead going into the second quarter and expanded it to 32-25 at the half.

The final 16 minutes were relatively even as TH players canned enough free throws (17-21 in the game) to ensure the victory.

Alex Callahan had a double-double with 12 points and as many rebounds. Austin Callahan led the TigerHawk scoring with 15 points, and Thomas Hanson was also in double figures with 11 points.

The TigerHawks played two-time defending UIC champion MFL/MM dead even for all but the first couple of minutes in Friday’s heartbreaking loss.

The Bulldogs opened with a 9-0 run, and NFV had to play catch-up all night.

The ‘Dogs still held the nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 20-11. The TigerHawks kept chipping away but just ran out of time.

NFV shot well, going 15-39 from the floor and 7-12 from downtown, but the MFL/MM defense was as stifling as the TigerHawk D, so neither team managed to get off a lot of shots. However, the ‘Dogs had that early run.

The stats were very evenly distributed for NFV with no one in double digits in any category.

Phil Kleve was the team leader in scoring with nine points, all from beyond the arc. Lincoln Johansen was right behind with eight points, while Austin Callahan and Hanson each scored six points.

The Callahan brothers and Johansen led the rebounding effort with each collecting six boards. Dakota Moore, Hunter Hoopes, and Kleve all grabbed three rebounds apiece.
