Resuming conference action last week, the Warrior basketball team had the fight of the season, down to the final second versus Sumner-Fredericksburg. Despite the disappointing loss, South Winn rebounded and manhandled Riceville later in the week.

vs. Sumner-Fred.

After giving up the first points of the game, South Winn pushed its way to the forefront Tuesday, Jan. 7, to an 8-4 lead just three minutes into the tussle. That lead quickly evaporated as the Cougars connected on a pair of back-to-back treys and closed the first quarter on a 5-1 run to lead, 17-13.

Trevor Schweinefus dumped a pass along the baseline to Andre Walz in the paint with 5:50 remaining to pull South Winn to within one, 20-19. Warming up to the fast tempo the Warriors like to run, South Winn rattled off point after point and closed out the half with a 32-28 advantage.

Midway through the third stanza, the Warriors and Cougars were deadlocked in offense at 32-32. Despite repeated looks at the rim, the scoring fell silent until the 1:31 mark when Garrett Bohach exploded with a pair of back-to-back treys, each answered by the Cougars, leaving South Winn trailing, 39-37, with 34 seconds remaining in the quarter. Walz managed to find his way into the lane in the closing seconds to knot the score, 39-39, as the two teams prepared for the final quarter.

The fourth quarter would become a nail-biter as S-F pulled out front, 48-43, with 2:32 remaining when Bohach found Adam Lensing under the basket for a bunny. Keeping the ball on the move, South Winn continued to find ways to get the ball into the hands of the right men, and it was Jordan Rommes who swished a long trey with 38 ticks remaining to knot it up at 50-50.

Attempting to send the game into overtime, South Winn accidently fouled a Cougar player, who sank one of his two charity tosses. Reciprocating the error, Lensing was sent to the free throw line with 1.9 seconds remaining and missed both free tosses, leaving the Cougars victorious, 51-50.

Three Warriors finished the game in double digits, led by Trevor Schweinefus with 16 points; Rommes and Bohach added 12 and 10, respectively.

Walz collected a team-high nine caroms with T. Schweinefus grabbing eight.

Pulling many of the Warriors’ main guys, the younger members allowed a much closer second quarter to be played, but South Winn continued to lead, 39-14, at halftime.

Another spurt by the starting lineup in the third quarter saw T. Schweinefus pour in 11 of the team’s 24 points, as the Warriors danced away with a 63-28 lead.

Riceville had no defense to stop the Warriors, and South Winn continued to dominate the defensive boards throughout the game en route to the 75-35 nonconference win over Riceville.
