Upper Iowa wrestlers finished seventh among the 25 teams, many from DI, in the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev., on Sunday, Dec. 22.

The tourney has been dubbed by some as the “toughest tournament in the country.” Not only does it features teams from all three divisions in the NCAA, but the tourney also has teams competing regardless of division.

Upper Iowa, currently ranks 13th in DII, the best of any team outside of DI. The Peacocks finished ahead of Oregon State and Stanford, both of which are ranked in the top 25 in DI. Nebraska, ranked eighth in DI, won the tournament, followed by Wyoming, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

UIU took 15 wrestlers to the tourney, and 12 scored points. Carl Broghammer had the best day for the Peacocks, finishing sixth at 197. The senior from Manchester went 3-1 but injury-defaulted his final two matches. Of his three wins, one was over an opponent from Nebraska; the other was from Stanford.

Blake Sorenson (184) and Logan Hopp (Hwt) both made the quarterfinals and finished with 2-2 records.

Elkader alum Mitch Funk was 2-2 at 125, earning UIU 2½ team points. Edwin Cooper was 2-0, including a pin, at 149, but injury-defaulted his final two matches.
