NEW AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE OPTIONS

Fall is off to a busy start.

As vice-chair of the Senate’s Government Oversight Committee, I’ve been listening and learning about conditions at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. We now await reports that will help us determine what changes may be needed there. We must do better by these kids.

The time to explore and sign up for new affordable health care options is now in full swing. Making sure every Iowa adult has access to affordable health care was a top priority during the 2013 session.

Our bipartisan work led to the Iowa Health & Wellness Plan, which will begin providing health insurance coverage on Jan. 1, 2014. Iowans can sign up for the Iowa Health & Wellness Plan or for private coverage through the new “Health Insurance Marketplace.”

These new health insurance options will:

Make quality, affordable health-care available to the 300,000 Iowans who are currently uninsured.

Reduce the increase in health care costs for everyone.

Focus on prevention and improving health, which will help Iowa become the healthiest state in the nation.

All plans will cover doctor visits, preventive care, hospital stays and prescriptions. Discrimination based on gender or pre-existing conditions is not allowed beginning in 2014. In addition, many Iowa families and small businesses will qualify for a break on their monthly premiums.

If you don’t have health insurance or if you want to explore your options, go to www.healthcare.gov. The site will provide accurate, easy-to-understand information to answer your questions about premiums, purchasing insurance, qualifying for financial assistance, and more. This official one-stop shop will help you review health-care options, compare insurance plans and enroll in the coverage that is right for you.

To speak with someone about your health insurance options, dial the 24/7 call center toll-free at 800-318-2596.
