Bigger and better raffle prizes and silent auction items headline the Turkey River Classic VII Charity Event, which will take place at Pleasant Valley Sports Club from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

Raffle prizes for this year’s event include a gas grill, a mountain bike, a children’s play vehicle, a chain saw, and a GPS. Raffle tickets are 6 for $5, 24 for $20, or 120 for $100.

Auction items include a gas grill, an electric smoker, a video camera, a music sound system, an indoor grill, a portable picnic table, and a golf putter. You may bid on auction items online up until noon on Friday by “liking” the Turkey River Classic on Facebook.

All prizes have been donated, and all proceeds go to support Valley Community Coalition’s Youth Mentoring Program. VCC is an organization that seeks to provide a safe, supportive and healthy community for children and families in the Valley area.

“If not for the Turkey River Classic, there would not be a mentoring program at Valley. Since grants ran out a few years back, this is the way the program is funded,” explained mentoring coordinator Stacey Batterson.

The mentoring program seeks to match K-12th-grade youth with positive adult role models who will help them to reach their fullest potential. Currently, the program has ten Valley youth paired with adult mentors. Batterson describes the mentors and mentees as a close-knit group of kids and adults who enjoy their time together.

“We are so thankful for everyone who has supported the program by donating prizes and auction items to the Turkey River Classic. We believe that the program is very beneficial to the kids, which is why we do it,” added Batterson.

In addition to the raffle and silent auction, the public can participate in Spin the Wheel for Youth, a public putting contest, register for a qualifying chance for a new motorcycle, or enjoy lunch or beverage specials at the Pleasant Valley Sports Club. There is something for just about everyone, and the public is encouraged to attend.

There are also still spots available (as of this writing) for the 18-hole golf tournament, which tees off at noon. It is a four-person best-shot tournament, with a variety of hole prizes being awarded and two special hole-in-one prizes. Anyone interested in entering the tournament should contact Ruth Friederich at (563) 426-5675.
