A day for remembrance

West Union

Military services will be provided by American Legion Post 15 and the North Fayette band on Memorial Day at the following locations (times are approximate):

8:30 a.m. – Auburn Cemetery.

9 a.m. – Eldorado Cemetery.

9:45 a.m. – Mount Calvary Cemetery.

10:15 a.m. – West Union Cemetery.

Terry Landsgaard will be the guest speaker.

Arlington

  10 a.m. – Arlington American Legion Dean Harkin Post 219 will host the community’s Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at Taylorville Cemetery, rural Arlington. The Rev. Julie Ahrens will be the guest speaker.

Taylorville Cemetery is located on Highway W51 one-half mile north of Arlington, one mile east on C2W, and one mile north on C Ave., on a gravel road.

Afterward, a lunch will be served to the public at the Legion Hall on Main Street in Arlington. A raffle will also be held for an American flag.   

Clermont

8 a.m. — Veterans meet at the Legion Hall. All veterans are invited and encouraged to attend.

8:20 a.m. — Military honors at God’s Acre Cemetery.

8:40 a.m. — Military honors at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

9 a.m. — Military honors at East Clermont Cemetery.

9:20 a.m. — Wreath-laying and military honors at Turkey River Bridge, Clermont, for those lost at sea.

10 a.m. — Memorial Day Program at Lincoln Park in Clermont. Guest speaker is U.S. Army Col. Bob Stavnes. In case of inclement weather, the program will move to the Clermont Opera House.

11 a.m. (approximately) – F16 flyover.

Elgin

8 a.m. – The members of the Elgin American Legion will assemble at the Veterans Memorial Community Building. Members will split into two groups at that time.

The first group will lead programs at the following locations at these approximate times:

8:45 a.m. – Houg Cemetery.

9 a.m. – Marion Cemetery.

9:45 a.m. – Highland Cemetery.

10:15 a.m. – Apostolic Cemetery.

The second group will meet at the following locations and approximate times:

9 a.m. – Brainard Cemetery.

10 a.m. – Illyria Cemetery.

10:30 a.m. – Elgin Turkey River Bridge (in honor of naval veterans).

Both groups will meet at the Elgin Cemetery at 11 a.m. Pastor Rick Johnson of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elgin will provide the message. A gun salute will follow the memorial address.

Fayette

10 a.m. – Fayette American Legion Post 339 will host the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial near City Hall in downtown Fayette. (In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Legion Hall.)

The guest speaker is Richard Patrick, professor of business at Upper Iowa University. Vocalist is Lori Decker, with Colin Gavin on the cornet accompanied by John “Whitey” West. 

Pastor R. Lee Boleyn will give the invocation and benediction. 

A brunch will be served at the Legion Hall following the ceremony.

The Avenue of Flags at Grandview Cemetery will be installed by 7 p.m. Friday.

Hawkeye

10 a.m. – American Legion Post 312 will advance the colors to open the ceremony at the Hawkeye Elementary.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Hawkeye Mayor Brent Ungerer will welcome those in attendance. The Hawkeye American Legion Auxiliary will present a memorial tribute, while the Hawkeye Boy Scouts will provide the readings. 

Trinity Lutheran Church interim Pastor David Nelson will serve as the guest speaker. A moment of silence will follow the singing of “God Bless America.”

The public is invited to participate in a service at the Hawkeye Cemetery immediately following the program.

Illyria Church

9:30 a.m. – Ron Soppe, combat medic serving in the Vietnam War, will be the guest speaker. Pianist Sara Strong will serve as accompanist.

An honors presentation will follow at the cemetery at approximately 10 a.m.

Lima Church

2:30 p.m. – Pastor Phil Rownd of Stanley Union Church will provide the message.

Special music will be provided by Beyond Logic.

Members of Wadena American Legion Post 631 will lead a march to the Lima Cemetery following the ceremony. 

Maynard

Maynard American Legion Lundbye-Carpenter Post 245 will host the following Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27:

8:30 a.m. – North bridge. 

8:45 a.m. – Center Grove Cemetery.

9 a.m. Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

10 a.m. Maynard Long Grove Cemetery. 

Guest speaker at Long Grove Cemetery will be state Senator Brian Schoenjahn of Arlington. The West Central band will perform several numbers. In case of rain, the service will be held at the Maynard Community Hall.

The Avenue of Flags at the Maynard Cemetery will be placed at 9 a.m. Friday, May 24, and removed Monday, May 27, at 4 p.m. The public is invited to assist with placement and removal of the Avenue of Flags.

Waucoma

Veterans and servicemembers are asked to meet at the Waucoma Legion Hall at 9:15 a.m. The program will follow at Waucoma Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Vice-commander Richard Trewin will provide the opening remarks. The Turkey Valley High School band will perform “The Star- Spangled Banner.”

Stacy Winter will provide the Memorial Day address. Taps will be performed by Turkey Valley band members following the address.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Waucoma Legion Hall.

Coffee, punch, donuts and kolaches will be served by Auxiliary members following the ceremony. 

Westgate

American Legion Messerer-Fox Post 92 of Westgate will host Memorial Day services in the post headquarters at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27. State Senator Brian Schoenjahn of Arlington will be the guest speaker, and the West Central band will be featured. 

A memorial ceremony will follow directly north of the Legion Hall, where Legionnaires will salute fallen comrades. Coffee, juice and rolls will be served in the hall following the ceremony.
