Vicky Kapnisis made her final high school appearance at the Drake Relays a memorable one as the senior finished fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot.

Kapnisis threw the discus 133’00” on her very first throw of the day on Thursday; it was the second-best distance of her career.

The throw stood as a medal-winning performance until the final round. In that round four girls passed the Hawk senior, three of which did it on their final throw of the day. The winner tied for eighth in the prelims and fouled twice in the finals before uncorking a throw of 154’04’ to win.

In the shot on Friday, Kapnisis threw a personal-best 39’08” to capture sixth.

Assistant track coach Mark Smith called Kapnisis’ two days in Des Moines “A great performance under great pressure, because the Drake Relays is the biggest stage in track in the state.”

In the Relays, there is no dividing the competitors by school size. Thus, Kapnisis was competing against the best throwers from across the state.
