A $2 million expansion project by Fredericksburg Farmers Co-op at its Hawkeye site will increase storage capacity and improve services for its farmer-members.

According to FFC's Jim Erickson, the expected demolition of the flat storage area just to the west of the main office will begin this week to make room for the expansion project.

Rural Hawkeye farmer Jon Halverson will be doing the demolition, which includes tearing down half of the flat storage area and leaving the warehouse. The construction project will include construction of a new grain dryer, two wet bins, a storage bin, and a receiving leg, Erickson said. It's hoped all work can be completed by Sept. 1.

The expansion is in response to a need to increase capacity as farms continue to increase in size.

Said Erickson, "Hawkeye is a good location for us. We have good business there. The co-op is well supported by our member-owner farmers."

Purchased by FFC in 2003, Erickson said Hawkeye area member-owners will also benefit on the agronomy side as both liquid and dry fertilizer can be shipped to Hawkeye from an expanded rail operation at Jackson Junction.

FCC’s Hawkeye location has five employees and serves an approximate 10-mile area in all directions. The Hawkeye site manager is Jeff Anfinson.

Fredericksburg Farmers Co-op locations include: Jackson Junction, Fredericksburg, Waucoma, Hawkeye,

Sumner, Frederika, Bremer and Ionia.
