A self-supporting operation funded only by billing for services provided, the Fayette Ambulance Service is seeking to raise funds for a new ambulance to better serve Fayette and the surrounding communities.

Seven paramedics, one advanced EMT, 12 EMTs, and seven drivers currently operate the all-volunteer service directed by Adam Hildebrand. Six more individuals are currently attending classes to become certified EMTs with the department, as well.

Approximately $160,000 is needed to replace the 1989 ambulance that is used as a second responding unit. The vintage vehicle, still in everyday use and was built by the Life-Line Emergency Vehicle Manufacturing Company in Sumner.

Each year the Fayette Ambulance Service serves as the stand-by for West Central and Upper Iowa University home football games, Fayette County Speedway stock car races, Volga Lake River Recreational Area, and special events at UIU. It also provides numerous transfers for Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Mutual support for Oelwein, Sumner, Arlington, and West Union EMS services are also provided upon request.

“Our goal is to continue the ability to cover EMS needs in our area as they have been done over the past 30-plus years,” said Hildebrand.

Although the Fayette Ambulance Service is a self-supporting operation primarily funded by billing for the services provided, it is harder for the service to collect money to cover all of its expenses as Medicare and Medicaid budgets are getting tighter.

The department will host a dinner, dance, and silent auction fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Upper Iowa University Student Center Gala Ballroom.
