Bud Jensen services today at UMC

Funeral services for J.C. “Bud” Jensen, 90, of West Union will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at United Methodist Church in West Union with the Rev. Scott Keele Kober officiating.

Burial will follow in the West Union Cemetery.

Visitation was set for Tuesday, March 12, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union, which is handling the arrangements.

Bud’s death occurred Friday, March 8, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Jens Christian Jensen Jr. was born May 13, 1922, to Jens Christian Jensen Sr. and Alice Mona (Cottier) Jensen at the family farm home in Windsor Township. He was named after his father, so he was always known by the nickname “Bud.”

Bud was baptized Aug. 12, 1924, and became a member of United Methodist Church in 1938.

He attended Windsor No. 1 country school through the eighth grade.

Bud was a charter member of the FFA chapter at West Union High School, where he graduated in 1939.

As a 4-H club member he enjoyed showing cattle at the Fayette County Fair.

Bud married Hazel Marie Neumann on May 4, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He farmed with his father on the family farm and was a farmer his entire working life. He also sold Funk's Seed Corn for a number of years. The father-son operation continued when Bud and son Jay farmed together until Bud retired.

In 1978, Bud and Hazel moved from the farm to their home at 404 W. Plum Street, where they lived until moving to Traditions in February of this year.

One of Bud’s favorite projects was having his 1952 GMC truck restored after using it on the farm for approximately 25 years. He got special enjoyment out of driving it in parades and entering it in local car and truck shows, at which he won several trophies.

Other favorite activities were fishing, shooting pool, playing cards, putting jigsaw puzzles together, doing word and number search puzzles, doing the Jumble in the daily paper, and meeting for morning coffee with his friends. Bud loved his pig collection, morel mushrooms in the spring, strawberries in the summer, and his morning oatmeal.

He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son; and two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Jensen.

Bud is survived by his wife, Hazel, of West Union; a daughter, Jane (Ken) Vande Berg of Decorah; a son, Jay (Carol) Jensen of West Union; a sister, Mona (Loren) Whitver of West Union; five grandchildren, Travis (Farha) Vande Berg of Syracuse, N.Y., Jeff (Jennifer) Jensen of Dike, Christina (Chris) Monson of Minneapolis, Minn., Lori (Nick) Rissman of Decorah, and Dayna (Ryan) Goodchild of Johnston; and seven great-grandchildren.
