A 'vision' to save a legacy

The log cabin that sits in Carey’s Park in Ossian has been a staple of the community for over 40 years. Recent efforts by the family of Bob Carey, who built the park and helped bring the cabin to its current site, have started to help make sure the cabin remains a part of Ossian for many years to come. Anyone who lives in or has even passed through the small community of Ossian has likely noticed a historic landmark. While it is certainly no hidden gem to locals, the story behind the nearly 150-year-old structure is one unknown to many.

Located along Highway 52 and sitting within Carey’s Park is a small log cabin. The story, however, goes back further than from when the land officially became Carey’s Park.

Injuries are mounting for the West Central football team after a 74-16 road loss to the Clarksville Indians on Friday, Sept. 8.

The Blue Devils were already without senior running back Collin Kime, who was following concussion protocol. During the first half, West Central’s Tyler Buzynski left the game with what was thought to be a concussion and was taken to the doctor as a precautionary measure. Also getting dinged up was running back Taylor Hepperle, who did play the rest of the game.

“We are beat up,” said Milder after the team's 13th straight loss. “We had four freshmen on the field in the fourth quarter. Taylor [Hepperle] took a helmet to the ribs and stomach, and we sent Buzynski to get checked out because we think he might have a concussion.

John Murray

John Murray

John T. Murray entered this world on August 25, 1926. The son of Madge (Cline) Murray and Thomas F. Murray, John spent his childhood in and around Wadena, Iowa. Four younger sisters and three younger brothers were added to the family over the following years.

He entered the US Navy on August 24, 1943, just 1 day before his 17th birthday. He claimed that since he had no birth certificate, the recruiter simply made up a birth date on his paperwork, enabling him to enlist. According to John while he was still in high school, he was encouraged by a navy veteran to enter submarine service because the pay was better and subs had the best food in the Navy. “It was a thousand times better than I expected. It was as good as home cooking,  maybe better”, said John. It is probably a good thing his mother didn’t hear that.
