When Arch Allies takes the stage on Saturday, July 29, the group will wrap up an eventful 164th Fayette County Fair.

For the first time in a while, the fair will host an event in the Grandstand every night. All Grandstand events Wednesday through Saturday start at 7 p.m.

It started with “The Johnny Rogers Show: The History of Rock-’n’-Roll  — Buddy and Beyond on Tuesday, July 25. Rogers was ready to wow the audience with song favorites from Ray Charles, Elvis, Buddy Holly and more.

The weekly races at the Fayette County Speedway were moved to Wednesday night for the fair. Don’t miss your favorite racers as they roar around the track seeking to the chance to be named champion in their respective classes. Payouts will be double for all classes this week.

The events in the Grandstand continue Thursday with the Tuff-N-Nuff Miniature Rodeo Association (TMRA) Show. The TMRA operates the world’s largest miniature rodeo for children 18 years and younger. Any child can sign up to participate in the event, and it is free for those children who don’t seek to score points from the event.

According to the organization's website, “The mission of the Tuff-N-Nuff Miniature Rodeo Association is to mentor each child in all aspects of the sport of rodeo, to foster compassionate animal care, demonstrate good sportsmanship, build new friendships, and consistently gain confidence one ride at a time.”

Before the rodeo will be the popular calf scrambles, also hosted in the Grandstand. Don’t miss your grandson or granddaughter trying to wrestle down and claim his or her very own calf, which can then be shown at next year’s Fayette County Fair.

Friday night is the Demolition Derby, which was brought back to the fair last year for the first time in a while. This year, minivans have been added to the hard-hitting fun. The same rules as last year will apply.

The band Challenger will be performing for free in the beer garden starting at 9 p.m.

At its regular Monday meeting, the West Union City Council accepted the resignation of West Union Police Chief Dylan Schauer.

Chief Schauer’s resignation is effective Sept. 5. He has been with the department approximately a year and three months. The former Wyoming resident moved to West Union in April 2016.

He has decided to move to the Dakotas to work on his father’s ranch, an opportunity that has been available to him for quite a while.

“I have chosen to accept an opportunity that takes me in a different direction with my career,” Schauer noted in his resignation letter. “Although it is a great opportunity and quite different than law enforcement, I feel that it is the right choice. I have enjoyed being your police chief and thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve in that capacity.”

In other news, the council sold a 1993 Toynes Tanker to Sumner, but the decision didn’t come without controversy. Mayor Kent Halverson broke a 2-2 tie of the council to sell the fire truck to Sumner over Westgate.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds raged through northeast Iowa on Wednesday, July 19. Damage done by the storm led Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds to issue a disaster proclamation while on a flight to China.

Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg visited Clermont and McGregor on Friday, July 21, to view the damage done by the storm.

In Clermont on July 19, straight-line winds were clocked at 80 mph, according to Lisa Roberts, Fayette County Emergency Management coordinator. Those winds knocked over trees and took out power lines, leaving much of the town in the dark Wednesday evening. However, all power was restored to Clermont by Friday evening.

The top-ranked New Hampton Chickasaws hosted the Warriors Saturday night for the Class 2A District 5 championship game and wasted no time in getting to work.

The Chickasaws scored a pair of runs in the first and four more in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0 early lead.

In the top of the third inning, however, South Winn was able to get on the scoreboard as they plated a pair of runs to draw closer.
