Throughout the world, approximately 200 million people are affected by thyroid disease. Among those, an estimated 62,450 new cases of thyroid cancer were diagnosed in 2016 alone.

Each and every year, the month of January is dedicated as thyroid awareness month, an effort to increase awareness about thyroid issues and help save lives.

In 2011, Nicole Kriener of West Union was at a routine physical when her doctor recommended that she see an endocrinologist to take a closer look at her thyroid.

For a lot of people in the Midwest, winter is nothing more than a headache. It means shoveling, wearing extra layers of clothing, scraping ice, and often-treacherous travel. For a select group of individuals, however, winter is paradise.

“The perfect day includes plenty of snow, sunshine, and a temperature of about 35 degrees,” explained Blake Kuennen of Festina, an avid snowmobiler who takes advantage of every opportunity to hop on his sled during the winter months in northeast Iowa.
