Valley alumnus Dr. Lon Butikofer was selected as a finalist for the American Hospital Association's (AHA) Rural Hospital Leadership Award.

The current chief executive officer of Regional Medical Center in Manchester didn’t win the award, but just being selected as a finalist was praise enough for the small independent hospital’s leader.

“It is just an opportunity to show that rural hospitals can do interesting things and be successful,” Butikofer said. “It’s hard to survive in the very challenging environment of today. The staff submitted my name and promoted the idea. I am proud of the profession I work in, and I am proud to lead a quality institution like we have.”

Millennials (people born between the mid ‘80s and mid ‘00s) are often viewed as lazy, technology-dependent people by older generations.

It is often said that millennials don’t know what hard work is and expect everything to be spoon-fed to them.

Several students at North Fayette Valley HIgh School break that perception every day, and one of those is senior Jordan Weber.

The West Central Blue Devils girls’ basketball team heads into Christmas break with back-to-back road losses against Central City, 97-58, on Monday, Dec. 19, and Edgewood-Colesburg, 62-44, the following night.

Despite the 1-6 start, there are plenty of positives for the girls to pull from. They are improving, plain and simple. It is easy to see in their play. They have already tied the number of wins they had last year and are scoring more points. In fact, the girls are scoring 7.6 more points per game (42.6) so far this year than they did a year ago (35).

“Coming into this game, we felt like we had a couple of good practices and had players beginning to be more aggressive,” Lockard noted.

New Fayette County Fair Board member Jerem White sees big things in the Fayette County Fair's future. He nominated himself for the board the year because he wants to have an impact on that bright future.

White would like to see the Fayette County Fair become the next “Country on the River” in Prairie du Chien or the next Jones County Fair. He has been excited by the two big-name concert acts, Eric Paslay and Easton Corbin, that the Fair has been able to draw the last two years. He feels the more big names the fair can get, the bigger the it will grow.

“I would love to see us become one of the next up-and-coming concert [venues],” White said. “Getting the big acts and having them Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights with concerts starting at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
