Kevin and Kristy Meyer of Elgin have hosted a number of foreign exchange students since 2008 when the first one arrived from Germany.

For the last eight years, the Meyers have also hosted students from France, Italy, and Norway. If you haven’t noticed, they proudly display those countries’ flags on their deck across from the bridge near North Fayette Valley Middle School.

“We never had kids of our own and would always wonder what it would be like to have someone in the house,” Kristy recalled, “to get to enjoy the sports and the activity of day-to-day life. So, we decided we would host exchange students.”

The Meyers got to add another flag this year, but what makes this flag unique is its location. The couple's newest foreign exchange student, Shahlo Alikhonzoda, is from Tajikistan. It’s a nice change of pace from the European countries represented in the past.

Last week at Central Elkader, the South Winneshiek cross country program continued to show why both the boys’ and girls’ squads are ranked in the top 10 of Class 2A.

“We had a large majority of athletes run their best, or close to their best, race of the season,” shared co-coach Kevin Kearney. “Our kids did a good job of getting themselves into a good position early in the race, and then, more importantly, we really competed well in the second half of the races.”

“The girls are continuing to work on improving their games,” said South Winneshiek volleyball coach Darcy Einck after a busy week on the court. “This weekend, I started to really see a team that is meshing together and working toward its goals.”

Turkey Valley

The Warriors saw their first action of the week Thursday in Jackson Junction as they took on Turkey Valley.

The Warriors were victorious in consecutive sets, winning 25-16, 25-21, and 28-26, to sweep the Trojans.

“The victory over Turkey Valley was a great win for us,” noted Einck. “We had a number of girls step up their game and play very consistent and strong.”

Senior Abby Hageman had nine kills to lead the red and white, while fellow senior Christina Nesvik was responsible for two of the team’s four blocks.

After losing its previous two games to Class 1A No. 7 Denver and Class A No. 1 St. Ansgar, the Warriors dropped below .500 for the first time since week one of 2015. Thanks to a dominating ground attack, South Winn was able to get back on track with a 28-8 win over district foe MFL/MarMac on Friday night.

40th Annual Rendezvous Days

This weekend marks the 40th annual celebrations of Rendezvous Days in Fort Atkinson.

Set to be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25, this year’s event will feature dozens of sights and activities that will make visitors feel as if they are roaming the Fort alongside the Winnebago Indians back in the 1840s.

Prior to the start of activities inside the fort, a Rendezvous Days 5K Run/Walk will be held, rain or shine, at 8:30 a.m. in Fort Atkinson.

With race day registration to begin at 7:30 a.m., participants will begin at the shelter in the park by the Fort Atkinson Community Center.
