Lions, tigers, bears, & hippos?

The American bison used to roam freely in Iowa. Now the only buffalo left that can be hunted are like Rinehart 3-D target at the Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA) last summer. This target and 99 others will return to Lookout Point on the VRRA grounds the weekend of Aug. 19-21 as the Echo Valley Archers host the Second Annual R100 Archery Tour. (Jerry Wadian photo)

This month the Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA) will be host to 100 different kinds of beasts, including lions, tigers, bears and hippos, as the Rinehart 100 Archery Tour returns to the area.

Last year the tour drew over 620 people to VRRA during its maiden visit to northeast Iowa.

That visit was so successful (second-highest attendance on the tour) that the R100 returns this year.

Some things will be the same, including two different trails, each over a mile long and filled with 50 3-D targets supplied by Rinehart Target of Janesville, Wis., the acknowledged leader in the field.

Holmstrom flies experimental plane 'just for the thrill'

The VK-30 Darrel Holmstrom flew to West Union features a propeller on the back of the plane with a mid-engine. The kit for the plane was originally manufactured by Cirrus Aircraft in Duluth, Minn., over 25 years ago, but was taken out of production when the company realized the plane was too difficult for the average pilot to fly. It took owner Ken Walch of Anchorage, Alaska, almost 25 years to build the plane. Chris DeBack photos

For as long as man has existed, we have always looked to the birds in the sky and wondered what it would be like to fly.

The Wright Brothers realized that dream on Dec. 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, N.C., and a century of innovation now has numerous people taking to the sky every day for work or pleasure.

However, engineers and enthusiasts are never satisfied, always trying to push the envelope to faster, more efficient aircraft. Former West Union resident Darrell Holmstrom, the son of West Union resident Phyllis Holmstrom and the late Don Holmstrom, recently had the opportunity to show off a unique innovation.
