Longevity is a term very familiar to Ossian’s Nilus and Jenny Imoehl. The couple have lived in Winneshiek County their entire lives, with the exception of the two years that Nilus was in the Navy. In 1957, they made the short move from their Festina farm to a new farm closer to Ossian, where they raised dairy and beef cows, hogs, and chickens for approximately 45 years.

More recently, the two moved inside the city limits of town. Jenny currently lives at Ossian Senior Hospice, a mainstay in the Ossian community that Nilus was very influential in helping bring to town over 50 years ago.

When the idea of building a senior citizen care facility in Ossian first came up in 1960, it quickly became a project that required many helping hands to help bring it to fruition.

Founded by Msgr. Vernon Peters and a group of individuals from the area who donated property, helped with fundraising, and constructed the building, the facility was built with the intention of providing senior citizens and retired persons with a home away from home among friends and neighbors.

The North Fayette Valley Mentoring program has a new coordinator in kindhearted Wadena native Jen Stolka.

She has held the part-time position since January, and now that she has settled into it, she is looking forward to making improvements. Currently, there is a waiting list of children looking to be paired with a mentor. Some of those children could be on the list for a year before being placed with a mentor.

Smoking meats is a passion of Jason and Sheila Bent.

The Oelwein couple have been asked a couple times to open a restaurant, but it wasn’t until the right opportunity came along in the former Westgate Tap that the two took a leap of faith.
