Dean E. Zupke, 71, of Sumner, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at his home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 3, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, Iowa.

Private family burial at a later date.

Visitation will be at held Friday, September 2, 2016 from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.

Dean Edward Zupke, 71, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at his home in Sumner after an eight year battle with prostate cancer.

Dean was born on the home farm in Sumner, Iowa to Walter and Lucille (Davis) Zupke on December, 17, 1944.

He graduated from Sumner High School in 1963.

Dean was united in marriage to Judy Puls on November 21, 1965 at Richfield Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa. To this union three children were born Krystal, Brad and Nena.

North Fayette Valley started its cross country season Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Edgewood.

Both varsity squads finished fourth. The girls’ JV placed third; the boys did not a have a full team. In fact, of the 11 schools at the meet, only five had full varsity men’s teams, and four had full teams for the JV.

After a slow first quarter, NFV unleashed a passing attack that opened the ground game on the way to a 28-7 win Friday at Decorah.

Early on, the TigerHawks shot themselves in the foot after penalties stopped their first two possessions.

Grau Funeral Homes purchases Burnham-Wood

 

Joshua Grau (center) of Grau Funeral Homes recently purchased Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union from S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in Sumner. The new owner takes over operation of the funeral home on Sept. 1. Grau noted that between himself, funeral directors Ryan Kester (left) and Mike Ellis, and three other part-time funeral directors, his company has approximately 175 years of funeral director experience to offer West Union.

As of Sept. 1, Grau Funeral Homes of Monona will take ownership of the Burnham-Wood Funeral Home operated by S.K. Rogers in West Union.

“It is extremely exciting,” said Joshua Grau, owner of Grau Funeral Homes. “You always look at towns that you’d like to be able to serve, and this was one of those towns that was appealing to us. It has a great downtown and very nice churches.”

Northeast Iowa assesses damage after flood

“Welcome to the River” took on a whole new meaning during the Turkey River flooding on Thursday. Aug. 25. The river hit a peak of 22.32 feet, which is 6.32 feet over the minor flood stage.

Heavy rain in Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek counties on Wednesday, Aug. 24, caused severe flooding of the Turkey and Upper Iowa rivers, in those counties, as well as in Fayette and Clayton County, on Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26.

Candlelight vigil at UIU

Club will host Candlelight vigil at UIU

The Upper Iowa University Criminal Justice Club will be host a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, Sept. 7, to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty this past year. Guest speakers will include Fayette Police Chief Richard Pisanti and others. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Grace Meyer Square on the Fayette Campus.
