When Keith and Kelli Kovarik decided to start growing a few plants in the basement and garage of their Hawkeye home 20 years ago, they didn’t really have any idea where it might lead. The couple’s love of gardening, encouraged by Keith taking a Master Gardener course in Decorah in 1994, led to growing several hundred vegetable, annual, and perennial plants from seed. In the beginning, they used what they grew themselves or gave plants away to family and friends.

The Warrior softball team began its journey through the 2016 postseason last week, winning a pair of games before being eliminated in the semifinal round of Region 4 to Class 2A No. 15-ranked Waterloo Columbus.

The impressive start to postseason play began Wednesday, July 6, as the Warriors hosted Sumner-Fredericksburg in Calmar.

After wrapping up the 2016 regular season last week, the Warriors embarked on their postseason journey Saturday at Waukon against the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs.

The Warriors broke the ice early, plating a run in the top of the first to take command.

Ruth Elsbernd, age 91, of Calmar, IA, died on Monday, July 4, 2016, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar.

Reverend Robert Gross, Reverend Donald Hawes and Deacon Andrew Marr officiated.

Interment was held in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar.
