The Warrior softball team made the short drive to Jackson Junction Thursday for doubleheader action against the Turkey Valley Trojans.

In game one of the twin bill, South Winn held a tight 1-0 advantage over the Trojans through five innings before exploding for four runs in the sixth and eventually winning, 6-2.

With less than three weeks left until the 2016 Winneshiek County Fair in Decorah, it’s time to start getting ready for another fun and exciting event.

The action kicks off on Tuesday, July 12, with the first of five full days jam-packed with fun and entertainment for people of all ages.

Music in the Park performances this weekend

 

“Oklahoma!” from the musical of the same name is one of the featured songs in the musical revue Music in the Park, scheduled for June 24-25 in Elgin. Volunteer performers from ages 7 to adult will be showcasing their musical and theatrical talents in Elgin over the weekend as they perform songs from “Wicked,” “Oklahoma,” “Rent,” “The Sound of Music” and “Annie, Get Your Gun.” Don’t miss your opportunity to  see these and several other selections from popular musicals during Music in the Park 2016. Two shows are scheduled, one on Friday, June 24, and another on Saturday, June 25, at Elgin City Park.

WC rebounds after tough game against Clayton Ridge

 

It was a race to third base for Wapsie Valley’s Melody Kayser and West Central’s Brianne Martin. Kayser was called safe on the play; however, due to heavy rain on Tuesday, June 14, the game was called after one inning.

The West Central Blue Devils softball team showed that mental toughness on Thursday, June 16, bouncing back from an 11-1 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader against Clayton Ridge to win, 6-5, in extra innings.

The Fayette City Council discussed the new police officer hire and applications for the city clerk position when it met Monday night.

Police Chief Rich Pisanti advised that newly hired officer Ben Davis has passed all necessary tests and will begin work with the city on Monday, June 27.

City Administrator Christie Dennis informed the council that 14 applications have been received for her position, although the deadline is July 8. As part of her report, Dennis also noted that she and deputy clerk Anne Sellers handled 96 city utility accounts from April through mid-June for people moving out and moving into mostly rental properties.

Alvin Gross

 

 

Alvin J. Gross, 93, of Eldorado, Iowa died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, Iowa.

Alvin John, the son of Justice Frederick “Fritz” and Elsie (Schatz) Gross, was born May 29, 1923 at the West Union Hospital (now the Fayette County Historical Society).

Alvin was baptized June 24, 1923 and confirmed May 16, 1937 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

He enjoyed growing up on the farm and attending country school in Eldorado. After finishing eighth grade and completing one year of high school in West Union, he helped his father on the family farm and frequently helped out neighboring farmers for a dollar a day.  As a young man he worked as a farm hand for Reuben Koester, a cream hauler for Leonard Pape, and a sawmill worker for Reynold Baumler.
