The NFV girls scored points in two events to earn three team points at the State Track Meet last week in Des Moines. Last year, the TigerHawks only scored one point, their first-ever in Des Moines.

This time, the 4x800 of Megan and Macy Niewoehner, Natalie Moyle and Rebecca Miller led the way with a seventh-place finish, earning two team points. Their time of 9:57.73 was a season-best. For Moyle and Miller, it marked the fourth time the duo has run the 4x800 on the blue oval at Drake Stadium.

Halva scores for 3rd year in row

It was a great finish in the 3200 at the State Track Meet Thursday in Des Moines. Danny Halva (left) and Ogden’s Andrew Stumbo went step for step down the backstretch with the Ogden junior winning in a photofinish, 9: 49.04 to 9:49.05. For Halva, it still meant five team points for NFV. It marked the third consecutive year Halva has scored points at a State Track Meet. He finished his TigerHawk career by compiling 15 points at State Meets, the only points ever scored by the NFV boys.

For the third consecutive year, the iron legs of Danny Halva scored the only points for the NFV boys at the State Track Meet in Des Moines last week.

Halva finished fourth in the 3200, just missing a bronze medal by an eyelash in a photo finish with Ogden’s Andrew Stumbo. Halva ran a personal-best time of 9:49.05 but was less than a half step behind Stumbo’s 9:49.04.

Neighborhood owls a hoot in W.U.

Only a few short weeks ago, Tracy and Laura Weidemann noticed a visitor in the large maple tree outside their West Union home. After monitoring the screech owl for several days, they spotted two baby owls peeking out of the same hole in the tree. (submitted photo)

It all began only a few short weeks ago outside of the living room window of West Union residents Tracy Weidemann and her daughter, Laura.

“I was watching TV one night when I was startled by an owl in the corner of the window. It scared me at first,” admitted Tracy as she pointed toward the large windows near the ceiling of her home.

Tracy and Laura spotted the owl fly a few yards across their front lawn into a large maple tree, where it made its way into a large hole in the tree.
