Success with fitness leads to program coaching

Ashley Becker asked Rachel Hanken of Unique Memories to put her professional photography skills to work in creating shots Becker could use on her social media page. Becker is a third grade teacher at Starmont Schools, but has found herself enjoying a second business in her free-time in which she coaches others on improving their nutrition and overall fitness. Although looking at 2½-year-old daughter Kinsley’s face has always made Ashley Becker smile, the 60 pounds she gained with pregnancy was cause for a lot of unhappiness in the months that followed, as Ashley was unable to lose the extra weight she’d gained.

“I was so tired, so emotionally exhausted,” she recalled of that time in 2013.

“It was really a struggle to enjoy life and live it to the fullest when you can’t look in the mirror or try on clothes without crying,” she now admits, two years later. “My entire ‘pre-pregnancy’ wardrobe didn’t fit, and I did NOT want to buy a bunch of clothes in bigger sizes.”

The school year can be a grind for students and teachers alike. Next year the North Fayette School District will try something a little different after it passed the 2016-2017 district calendar at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 11. It will institute a spring break for next school year.

The break would occur March 20-24; without the weeklong break students and teachers only get a day off for certain holidays and four days for Easter. Superintendent Duane Willhite is going to try to negotiate down the Easter break with staff to just three days from four by eliminating that Monday off.
