Over a decade ago, Ossian resident and community activist Arlene Brockman contacted Winneshiek County Barn Quilt organizer Elizabeth Lorentzen about bringing the beauty of the rural-inspired barn quilts to Ossian.

“She was so energetic and excited about it,” recalled Lorentzen. “And it just so happened that we were looking to find someone to help spread the barn quilts in the southern portion of the county.”

When Kris Einck began the new school year in August, it was his first in which he would don the Warrior red and white colors. The northeast Iowa native was eager to see what challenges would await him as he began the year as principal of both the high school and elementary/middle school.

However, with less than a full semester of experience under his belt, the current administrator recently accepted a new role within the district for the 2016-17 school year, that of superintendent, high school principal, and athletic director.

Things haven’t been pretty for the West Central girls’ basketball team. It has opened the season with three blowout defeats after a 65-15 loss to Turkey Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and a 67-36 loss to Starmont on Friday, Dec. 11.

However, head coach Emily Novotny isn’t screaming change, she isn’t screaming failure. In fact, she is doing just the opposite. Novotny knows change doesn’t happen overnight. A team that won just two games a season ago doesn’t become world beaters in just one off season.

Fayette Council agrees to resurface Big Rock Road

Council agrees to resurface Big Rock Road

The Fayette City Council moved forward with plans to resurface Big Rock Road in 2016, but without the suggested four-foot-wide walking lane on the north side. At the council’s Dec. 7 meeting, residents Dave and Sue Runyon asked the council to consider adding a pedestrian trail/bike path to the north of the road, due to heavy recreation traffic on Big Rock Road.

Engineer Jon Biederman told the council that although he’d taken another look at the costs for the work, he was unable to pare the estimate lower than $352,000. The project entails a two-inch asphalt overlay on the 18-foot-wide roadway. Biederman said that in places, a steep cross-slope exists so some edges of the roadway need to be thickened before the asphalt overlay is put down.
