The South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ cross country teams got their 2015 seasons underway Saturday morning in Decorah, participating in the Luther All-American Meet.

Both junior varsity squads ran for the Warriors, along with the varsity girls. The JV boys’ squad placed fourth as a team out of 17 schools, scoring 113 points. The girls JV team placed seventh out of 18, scoring 184 points. With only four varsity runners participating for the girls team, they were not eligible to score in the team race.

The Warrior volleyball team recently finished a busy week with a 1-5 record, including a win over East Buchanan.

South Winn kicked the week off with a home match against conference rival North Fayette Valley. In the first set, the TigerHawks edged the Warriors, 27-25. NFV won another close one in the second set, 25-21, but South Winn responded with a big 25-20 win in the third set of the evening.

The Warriors got district football play kicked off just as they would have liked, beating the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs, 50-24, on the road.

“We were able to get out to a fast start running the football,” explained head coach Jason Ohrt after the win. “Our offensive line played well and is showing improvement each week.”

The Ossian City Council met on Wednesday night, Sept. 9, following the Labor Day holiday.

With Police Chief Joe Ward on hand, the council discussed its plans to act on Ossian properties with nuisance issues.

An official with the City of Ossian, along with a representative from the Calmar/Ossian Police Department, recently drove around town to find properties that are currently in violation of the City’s nuisance ordinances. The properties that were deemed in violation were assembled in a list for further action.

Aylsworths to rule Wadena for a day

Douglas and Rhonda Aylsworth will reign over the community of Wadena for one day as king and queen of Wadena Community Day. The celebration is set to take place on Sept. 20 with the king and queen riding in the parade. The lifelong residents of Wadena are thrilled to be honored by their hometown.

The Blue Devils (1-3) fell at home for the first time this season after a 42-12 thumping by Midland (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 11.

 

It wasn’t much of a surprise for West Central head coach Steve Milder, who knew Midland was going to be tough.

West Central volleyball claimed its first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Postville at the Clayton Ridge Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12.

 

The Blue Devils fell in its other two matches against Clayton Ridge (21-15, 21-15) and Starmont (21-16, 21-5).
