Antiques and Gifts on Vine will open its doors today (Wednesday, Sept. 30).

The brainchild of Pam Rogers, Clocktower Antiques and Gifts in Sumner owner, and her friend Kim Mork of West Union will provide area shoppers with inexpensive, but unique items similar to Clocktower.

“We want people to know that it is antiques and gifts; it will be primitives and repurposed items, a lot of repurposed items,” Rogers said. “Most of our repurposed items are gonna be in that $20 to $75 range.

Unemployment rate drops in Fayette County

Unemployment dropped in Fayette County to 4 percent in August. That is a .1 percent decrease over July and is .8 percent lower than in August 2014. Data from Fayette County Economic Development suggests that generally speaking, the county does see a roller-coaster effect when it comes to unemployment as it rises in the winter when not as many construction jobs are available.

As the new Downtown Academy on South Vine Street in West Union enters its second month of operation, it continues to help alternative-school students learn the skills needed to assimilate successfully into society.

The four-person staff is led by Brent Kuker, head teacher; Jacob Pedersen, behavior interventionist; Elise Vandersee, associate; and Kristen Pennebaker, associate.

The staff works to help the five full-time students and one part-time student learn at a pace that is conducive to their learning. The academy can host a maximum of eight students.

Warrior netters pick up pair of wins

The South Winneshiek volleyball team notched a couple wins to its season total this week by beating the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs once on Thursday, Sept. 17, and again on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Springville Tournament.

The Warriors, who faced some fierce competition in Springville, also lost three matches to Springville, Wilton, and Iowa City Regina.
