One giant Leap for education

Connie Franzen, a math instructor at South Winneshiek, was recently granted the opportunity to attend the Space Academy for Educators program in Huntsville, Ala. Franzen, one of only 200 educators from around the world, had the opportunity to broaden her teaching methods and learn the ins and outs of the NASA space program during the course of the five-day experience. One giant leap for education

For many children and adults around the world, visiting the moon or outer space is one of the most thrilling dreams. For one local teacher, her dream of visiting Space Camp and learning the ins and outs of the NASA Space Program became a reality.

Although she did not leave the earth, the experience on which South Winneshiek fifth- through eighth-grade math teacher Connie Franzen recently embarked was a learning experience that she describes as “out of this world.” She attended the Space Academy for Educators program in Huntsville, Ala.

There will be a new face walking around the hallways of South Winneshiek Elementary/Middle School and High School this fall. Kris Einck has already assumed his duties as the new K-12 principal for the district.

“My main goal is for everything to transition smoothly,” said the new South Winn administrator. “I want to continue the tradition of excellence in education that we have here at South Winn. We have an outstanding academic curriculum, strong athletics, and a great fine arts program. It is my intention to continue these trends and look to improve them in any way possible.”

Over the years, Bev Strong (left) put together a number of programs for the public libraries in Elgin and Decorah, some of which are documented in the framed keepsake shown here. Bev’s granddaughter, Kayla Pollock, will be starting work as a teacher/librarian this fall in the North Fayette and Valley school districts.

Albert Einstein once said, “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” For Bev Strong and her granddaughter Kayla Pollock, who have discovered the importance of libraries in their own lives, truer words have never been spoken.
