Freedom 5K to show American spirit

The Freedom 5K is an event for runners and walkers to show off their American spirit as well as aid a 2-year-old stricken with leukemia.

Participants will be asked to dress in American-themed clothing to show their pride in and love of America, and the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors as all profits from the Freedom 5K will go to help with the medical expenses of Nalla Billmeyer, the local 2-year-old stricken with leukemia.

Runners and walkers will enjoy music and America-themed party favors at each mile marker. Afterwards, there will be cool refreshments as well as a variety of treats and awards.

The Freedom 5K will begin and end in the Clermont City Park on Saturday, Sept. 12. The starting time will be 5:30 p.m., with check-in starting at 5 p.m.

Meet Joel Fantz, Fayette County’s newest County Engineer.

The Fayette County Supervisors approved his contract at their weekly meeting on Monday, Aug. 10. He will begin his tenure on Aug. 24, training under current County Engineer Al Miller until Miller’s last day on Sept. 13.

Fantz, pronounced Fonts, is an Iowa boy born and raised. He graduated from high school in Algona. Hearing the call to serve, he headed off to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He spent 11 years in the Navy, serving in Guam, Bosnia, Spain and living for three years in Italy. Fantz also lived in various states during his tenure. He started his naval career flying helicopters before joining the Civil Engineer Corps.

Even though he retired from teaching and working in education administration several years ago, Fayette resident Richard “Dick” Nihart continues to have a positive influence on young people around him.

During Fayette’s Watermelon Days celebration, Nihart will be honored as grand marshal, leading Saturday’s parade on Sept. 12.

Dick Nihart came to Fayette in 1963, when he accepted a job to teach science and assist with coaching football at the town’s high school.

Lawrence Leland “Larry” Bright, 87, of Waterloo, formerly of West Union, died Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home after a long battle with Interstitial Lung Disease.

He was born April 5, 1928 in Humeston, IA the son of Willard L. and Etta Mae (Leeper) Bright. They moved to Waterloo when he was 8 years old.

In 1945 Larry enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  While in the service he was on board the USS Sylvania in the Operation Crossroads Marshall Islands, Bikini atomic bomb testings.  They decommissioned his ship due to radiation contamination and he then served on board the USS Boxer.  He was honorably discharged in 1947 as Seaman 1st Class. 

While in the service he married Joyce Hinton and had two sons; they were later divorced. 

He married Yvonne Jones and had a son and two daughters; they were later divorced. 

In 1973 he married Louise Smock Messingham.

Inez Luchsinger

Inez Luchsinger

 

 

Inez Mae Clark Miller Luchsinger, 90, of Elgin, Iowa died Wednesday, August 12, 2015 under the care of Hospice Campussus and Palliative Care at the University Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa, after a long battle with cellulitis in her legs.

Inez was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1925 in West Union, Iowa to Alfred and Georgia Darnella (Goode) Clark.

She grew up in the West Union area in a home in town built by her father and on a farm in the country east of town.

Inez attended country school and West Union schools until she was sixteen and in eleventh grade when she was needed at home to help care for her baby sister, Sandra and her ill mother.

As an adult Inez became a believer and follower of her Lord Jesus Christ. She was a long time member of The First Baptist Church of Elgin, Iowa.

On June 14, 1944 Inez married Clifton Dale Miller at the Baptist Church in West Union, Iowa.

Archery preregistration still open

In this photo from the Rinehart R100 website, an archer takes aim at a target replicating an almost life-sized elephant. This target and 99 more representing American and African game animals, as well as a few dinosaurs, will be at the Volga River Recreation Area for the final stop on the R100 Tour. Sponsored by Echo Valley Archers, the R100 is open to anyone. Non-archers who wish to see what the course or targets look like may drop by the Thursday or Friday before as EVA members get the course ready.

For anyone thinking of taking on the best archers in the country or just having fun with a bow, there is still time to preregister for the Rinehart R100 coming Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29-30 to Lookout Peak at the Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA).

The Rinehart R100 is one of the most prestigious archery tours in the country. It will feature two one-mile loops with 50 targets per loop.

School board elections in Iowa are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8. North Fayette and Valley school districts will both have vacancies to fill in the coming election. Following are the candidates seeking election or re-election in each district.

 

North Fayette

            Carolyn Roys is running for District 2, the position previously held by Randy Tope, who is not running again.

Roy Guenther has been on the North Fayette school board for 19 years and currently serves as president. He is running for re-election in District 3.

John Michael is running as a write-in candidate for the North Fayette school board in District 1

Whitver golfing below his age

Buck Whitver drives off the tee on hole one at Big Rock Country Club in Fayette on Wednesday, Aug. 19.  The now 88-year-old avid golfer continues to shoot below his age averaging an 80 to an 85 on a normal outing.

Whether they are 35 or 65, many golfers wish they could score their age. West Union resident Buck Whitver is doing one better; he consistently shoots well below his age.

 

What makes it more remarkable is that at 88 years old Whitver still shoots 80 to 85 on a fairly consistent basis. He attributes his success on the fairway to practice, but credits his vitality at such a senior age to the game itself.
