Hawes brothers to embark on next journey

With a combined 35 years of service to their respective parishes, Monsignor Cletus Hawes and Father Donald Hawes are preparing to say goodbye on July 14 to the communities of which they have grown to become a vital part.

Monsignor Cletus Hawes has been the pastor of St. Francis DeSales Parish in Ossian and Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina since 1999. His younger brother, the Rev. Donald Hawes, has been the pastor of St. Aloysius in Calmar and St. Wenceslaus in Spillville since 1997.

Monsignor Hawes, 88, and Father Hawes, 86, are currently the two oldest pastors in the Archdiocese of Dubuqe.

8 Seconds Band to perform at 'Music in the Park'

 

Providing live music for Elgin’s “Music in the Park” dance is 8 Seconds Band, a group from Cedar Rapids that plays country, southern rock, and rock-and-roll music. The dance is scheduled for June 27 from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Elgin City Park.

The Elgin Homecoming Committee is hosting a dance during “Music in the Park” on Saturday, June 27. Live music by the 8 Seconds Band will be featured, beginning at 8 p.m. and lasting until midnight.

            8 Seconds Band is an energetic and powerful country band from Cedar Rapids that has earned numerous opening spots for national recording artists such as Dierks Bentley, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Randy Houser, Justin Moore, Eric Paslay, and Billy Currington. They play country, southern rock, and rock-and-roll music and are known for their strong vocals, tight harmonies, and unique musical style and sound.

After a couple months in business TiCo Market will host a grand opening Saturday, June 27, to spread the word: We are open!

 

TiCo, which is located in downtown Elgin right next to Dotzy’s, will have one-day specials that include $4.99 for a pale of Blue Bunny ice cream and ground beef on sale as well. is still working out the details.

WU Triathlon June 28

 

 

The Triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K run winding around the North Fayette Valley cross country course. After the run, there is a 16-mile bike ride on roads north of the Aquatic Center. The final leg is swimming eight lengths of the pool (approximately 200 yards). 

A person may participate in all three legs of the competition, or be part of a three-person team in which each person takes a different leg. The teams may be all male, all female or coed. 

Preregistration is required.  The deadline for entering is Thursday, June 25. Registration forms are available at City Hall or the Chamber of Commerce office, or on the Park & Rec website, www.WUParkandRec.com

St. Lucas Veterans Memorial completed

The St. Lucas Veterans Memorial has been completed and will be dedicated in a ceremony to be held Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m during St. Lucas Fun Days. Everyone is invited to attend a social hour beginning at 5 p.m. as well as the dedication to follow. State Representative Darrel Branhagen, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, will be the speaker for the occasion.

“We thought it would be a great time to dedicate the memorial since so many people will be in town this weekend for St. Lucas Fun Days,” said Melvin Bodensteiner, St. Lucas Legion adjutant.

The memorial is located directly south of the Community Center, on land donated by Susan Nusz in memory of her late husband, Lawayne Nusz. St. Lucas Aloysius Schmitt American Legion Post 691, Auxiliary Unit 691, and the City of St. Lucas all worked together to make the memorial a reality.

Storm takes down house near Maynard

The home of Robert and Ursula Cole, located southeast of Maynard, was blown partially off its foundation sometime after 8:30 a.m. when a storm that caused significant damage in Fayette County on Monday morning, June 22, passed through the area. Mr. and Mrs. Cole were inside the home when the damage occurred. The couple were rescued, with Mrs. Cole sustaining injuries and being transported to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein.

 

Storm takes down house near Maynard

 

 

On Monday, June 22, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a severe storm tore through Fayette County. At 8:47 a.m. the Fayette County Sheriff's Office took a report of a house down with two occupants trapped inside at 10846 80th Street, Maynard.

Fayette County Sheriff's deputies, the Maynard Fire Department and First Responders responded to the scene. Upon their arrival at the scene, they learned that a two-story house had been blown partly off its foundation and had sustained severe damage.

Property owners Robert Cole, 73, and Ursula Cole, 78, were still inside the residence. Rescuers were able to get both subjects out of the residence through an open area in the northwest corner of the house.

Harold William Crain of West Union, Iowa entered his heavenly home on Friday morning June 19th 2015 at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, Iowa with Millie by his side.

Harold was born February 9th 1931 to Lester Nelson Crain and Leta Voshell Crain. He grew up on a farm near Brainerd, Iowa. 

He worked at several gas stations in his younger years and later worked for the Elsheimers Meat Packing Plant for 3 years. He spent most of his working years at Ken’s Conoco pumping gas and fixing cars. He finished his career working for the Fayette County Road Dept. from 1975-1993.

Harold came to know the Lord February 24th, 1949 and attended the West Union Gospel Hall.

Braulic “Cabby” Caballero, 85, of Fayette died Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home in Fayette.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. James Brokman officiating. 

Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #339 of Fayette. 

Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Monday, June 22nd at Becker-Milnes Funeral home in Fayette and for one hour preceding mass at the church on Tuesday. There was a rosary recited at 4:00 p.m. and scripture service with sharing of memories at 7:00 p.m., both on Monday at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Office of Student Development Cabby Fund at Upper Iowa University.
