With two third-place finishes in the team standings last week, it is a safe bet that the Warriors are still improving.

At Decorah

With 82 points, South Winn finished behind host Decorah and Osage on Monday, April 21.

Leaping a distance of 20’8”, sophomore Ben Meyer garnered first place in the long jump for the Warriors.

Earning big points for the South Winn team were the 4x100, 4x200 and distance medley relays as they all broke the finish line tape in first place.

Members of the 4x100 included Jared Schroeder, Treyton Jacobsen, Alex Shatek, and Jordan Rommes. Exchanging Ben Meyer for Jacobsen, the 4x200 quartet remained nearly identical and completed the race in 1:34.67.

Earlier in the week, the South Winn girls finished third against much larger schools at Hudson to finish fourth with 65.50 points.

At Hudson

Shining brightly at Hudson was junior Brittany Shindelar, who claimed gold in the shot put with a heave of 35’4”.

Freshman Josie Kriener maintained a steady pace in the 1500m run and crossed the finish line in second place in 5:25.68.

Several weeks into the 2014 season and the Warrior boys’ golf team has just one loss.

Boys’ team

South Winn opened last week’s busy round of competition at the Tri-City Golf Course near Luana, teeing off against MFL/MarMac and Postville winning, 151-262-223, on Monday.

“It was a breezy day, but the boys are starting to show their power,” said SW coach Doug Schweinefus. “Our top four played very consistent today.”

It was a tight race for the medalist spot between sophomores Logan Schweinefus (36) and Nathan Winter (37). Close behind were Trevor Schweinefus and Blake Kuennen with 39 strokes apiece.

'Seussical Jr.' will take CFS stage

CFS students in kindergarten through third grade are excited to announce their upcoming performance of “Seussical Jr,” which will take center stage Thursday-Saturday, May 8-10, in Spillville. These younger students are just half of the cast that will entertain audiences of all ages with the antics of many beloved Dr. Seuss characters. (submitted photo)

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to a butter-battling military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's attention to the speck of dust and his "loitering" care of Mayzie LaBird's egg has elicited taunting and accusations from the rest of the animal kingdom, except for Gertrude McFuzz, who longs for his attention, and JoJo, whose "thinks" save them all in the end.

All this and so much more will be on the CFS stage in “Seussical Jr.” Thursday-Saturday, May 8-10. CFS students will perform a matinee production at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Spillville gym. The public has two more chances to see the performance at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening.

Learn putting the pieces together

Sewing since she was a young girl in 4-H, Joan Learn has narrowed her hobby to wall hangings and table runners, which she sells on consignment in Cresco and every year at northeast Iowa craft shows, including this weekend’s Country in the Hills Arts and Craft Show at the Heritage Farm Park near Clermont. Over 40 years ago Joan Learn was interested in sewing just like many girls her age, beginning her love for fabrics and creativity through 4-H.

Over the years she turned her curiosity into a money-saving venture, sewing clothing for her three daughters.

Now grown, her daughters don’t need clothes, and the recent widow has much time on her hands.
